A Letter from Chief Kenneth W. Lack

The Brookville Police Department was established on June 1, 2022, and proudly provides police services to the Incorporated Villages of Brookville, Cove Neck, Matinecock, and Mill Neck. Police Headquarters is centrally located at 195 Brookville Road, Brookville, New York. While headquarters is based in Brookville, marked patrol vehicles are strategically deployed throughout all villages to ensure rapid response times and effective police coverage.

My policing philosophy is grounded in community policing and sustained community engagement. Law enforcement agencies cannot succeed in their mission without the active partnership of the communities they serve. In 1829, Sir Robert Peel, widely regarded as the father of modern policing, articulated nine foundational principles of policing. One such principle states that “the police are the public and the public are the police,” underscoring that public safety is a shared responsibility between law enforcement and the community.

This principle has never been more relevant than it is today, particularly with respect to crime prevention. Since the inception of this Department, residents have been encouraged to take proactive measures such as locking vehicles, removing key fobs even when parked in driveways, securing residences, utilizing alarm systems, and maintaining exterior lighting during evening hours. I am pleased to report that these collective efforts, combined with consistent and proactive police patrols, have resulted in a substantial reduction—and near elimination—of vehicle larcenies and residential burglaries that have impacted the North Shore region. While this success is encouraging, complacency must be avoided. Continued vigilance and cooperation are essential to maintaining the high level of public safety our communities expect and deserve.

Effective June 1, 2022, the Brookville Police Department utilizes the Nassau County 911 emergency communications system for police response. This system is operated by the Nassau County Police Department Communications Bureau and is already funded through residents’ Nassau County tax assessments. The majority of surrounding village police departments are similarly dispatched through this system, which provides enhanced situational awareness and coordinated response capabilities.

Residents are instructed to dial 911 for all police-related matters, including motor vehicle accidents, suspicious persons or vehicles, erratic drivers, parking conditions, and village ordinance violations. When in doubt, residents are encouraged to call 911 so that appropriate police services can be promptly dispatched.

For general administrative or non-emergency matters—such as parking permits, alarm permits, general inquiries, or vacant premises notifications—residents may contact Police Headquarters directly at 516-440-2300.

On behalf of the Brookville Police Department, I thank you for your continued cooperation and commitment to public safety.

Respectfully,

Kenneth W. Lack

MISSION STATEMENT

WE, the members of the Brookville Police Department, are committed to providing ethical, quality, and responsive service to the community with pride and professionalism. WE are committed to improving the quality of life for those we serve by delivering the highest standard of police services.

Values

our-values

In an ever-changing world, core values are constant, they are fundamental beliefs of a person. Core values are not descriptions of the work we do or the strategies we employ to accomplish our mission. These values underlie our work, how we interact with each other and members of our community and form the basis of our decision-making. These three beliefs and values guide and inspire us in all we say and do; we will continually internalize and model these core values:

Courage

Courage is more than running toward gunshots while everyone else runs away from them — and it is more than checking out a dark building on an even-darker night. Yes, courage is physical bravery, but courage is about developing character and the courage it takes to act on one’s core values – respect for life, treating others with dignity and respect, making fair decisions, being honest, and ascribing at all times to the rule of law.

Service

Service

We value the opportunity to provide service that is courteous, responsive, firm, efficient, and fair. We regard the members of our community as partners and indispensable resources in a combined policing effort. Respect for the individual worth, dignity, and rights of all those we serve is the foundation of our department.

Integrity

We value and expect truth, honesty, and ethical behavior from the members of our organization. We are committed to upholding our position of public trust by maintaining the highest ethical standards and the utmost respect for the ordinances and laws of our villages, state, and nation. Our role as peacekeepers and officers of the law will not be compromised.
